Our departmental Bright Spot for December is the Office of Undergraduate Admissions! They invested the energy and time this past summer to participate in a staff retreat that helped continue to build trust with one another as a team. Learn how this retreat changed their workplace culture for the better by watching this awesome 3 minute video!

When we interviewed some of the OUA staff, there was a consistent factor mentioned. Leadership and support from OUA Director Amy Jarich and AVC Anne De Luca were integral in providing a professional development opportunity and community building event that would continue to enhance OUA to become an even greater place to work.

Here are some tips on building trust within a team from OUA and GO BIG staff members Kristian Cloyd, Kristine Lee, and Lakeysha Spears:

  • Be willing to be vulnerable and show your authentic self. When you can show that you’re human, make mistakes (and you own up to them), more trust is built within the team.
  • Develop a personal relationship with the team by sharing about your upbringing, kids, hobbies, etc.
  • Do small acts of kindnesstake someone to coffee, throw away trash for someone, give compliments
  • Be willing to be vulnerable and show your authentic self. When you can show that you’re human, make mistakes (and you own up to them), more trust is built within the team.
  • Create the environment and safety to give and receive constructive feedback.

Thanks to you, OUA, for helping to make our students’ dreams come true to attend UC Berkeley…and for being a great example of what it takes to build a community based on trust.
