Legacy is often referred to when describing what one wants to be remembered for (i.e., something meaningful that the person has done during their life). When thinking about your individual legacy at UC Berkeley, no matter how long you’ve been employed here–what legacy are you building to make this a great place to work?
In the article “How to Leave a Legacy at Work” author Phyllis Weiss Haserot states that “‘Work legacy’ can be about such things as creating new work processes, mentoring and transferring knowledge to younger employees and training new talent. It’s what you pass on to the next generations and your peers in as broad a sense as you would like. It’s having achieved something that lives on, that conveys your purpose, that is bigger than what you are doing at the moment.”
According to Great Place to Work’s 2016 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® survey data, the biggest determining factor of employee retention is if individuals feel their work has special meaning, and it is more than “just a job.” Anil Saxena states that a prominent factor of a great workplace is when an individual feels that their unique contributions really matter to their organization, they know the importance of their work, and can envision the impact they had if they were to leave.
We can never fully predict the future. What we can control is the legacy and purpose that we can continue to build upon for ourselves and our Student Affairs community each day.
